Dr Laura B Alvarez (she/her)

Director of AG design consultants

Laura is an urban designer with a background in architecture; she completed her PhD at the University of Nottingham in the subject of social sustainability, engagement and placemaking. Mixing the worlds of practice, academia and local authority, In her position at Nottingham City Council, Laura developed the Design Quality Framework, the first application of the UK National Design Guide at a local level, which preceded the National Model Design Code. TPart of this work included the creation of the Co-PLACE platform. Through her work, Laura currently champions three main causes: climate action, social inclusion and health and wellbeing, which she promotes through journalism and academic writing. Speaks English and Spanish.

Kara is an Architect and Founder of TerraLupa, a platform for ecological regeneration and re-establishing our connection to nature, encouraging design that promotes positive integration with local ecosystems and communities. She runs the Co-Lab Studio for AWW in Bristol and is a part-time Associate Lecturer at the University of West England.  Kara is also a Board Director for international organisation Land is Life and local organisation Artspace Lifespace, and has been part of the TEDxBristol

Kate is a designer and academic who specialises in participatory design processes. Her research focuses on co-design for the built environment, developing community-led urban developments.  Kate was Creative Director for Interface, a global leader in sustainable floor coverings and Programme Leader at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. She has lectured at conferences and universities around the world, sharing her passion for user-centred design.  As Senior Co-Design Lead at Policy Lab UK, a design team set up to help UK government departments to use design in policymaking. Working on projects across the UK government and beyond reimagine policymaking through participatory design thinking and doing. Policy Lab believes that people-centred approaches and experimentation transform policymaking and outcomes for citizens.

Cara's doctoral research examines how residents of Cape Town practice and negotiate togetherness in the city and has a  BA Hons in Political Science, International Relations, Public Policy and Development Studies from the Universities of Cape Town and a Masters in Cities and Global Development from the University of Sheffield. She has worked as a researcher with housing coalitions, research institutes and universities in South Africa and the United Kingdom on projects ranging from migration and xenophobia; community-led development and affordable housing alternatives; African urbanism and informality; urban infrastructure and inequality; middle-class urban anxiety; and loneliness in cities

Senior Director of the American Institute of Architects’ Center for Communities by Design.

The Center is a leading provider of pro bono technical assistance and democratic design for community success. Its programs have catalyzed billions of dollars in sustainable development across the United States, helping to create some of the most vibrant places in America today. The Center’s design assistance process has been recognized with numerous awards and has been replicated and adapted across the world.
Joel’s 26-year career has been focused on strengthening civic capacity, public processes and civic institutions. This work has helped millions of people participate in democratic processes, visioning efforts, and community planning initiatives. He has delivered presentations, training content, workshops and public processes in over a dozen countries across 5 continents. In the United States, Joel has provided consultative services to hundreds of communities, leading participatory processes on the ground in over 85 communities across 35 states. His work has been featured in over 1,000 media stories.
He was a founding Board Member of the International Association for Public Participation’s United States Chapter. He has spoken at numerous international conferences concerning democratic urbanism and the role of democracy in urban success,
including serving as the Co-Convener of the Remaking Cities Congress in 2013. Joel is an Academician of the Academy of Urbanism in London, UK. He is the author of numerous articles on the relationship between democracy, civic capacity and community.

Noha is an urban designer, academic and social entrepreneur. She is the founding Director of MELA Social Enterprise on a mission to design inclusive public spaces. Noha is a Council of Europe Intercultural Cities Expert in Public Space and Fellow of the RSA. She co-edits the Journal, Urban Design International and is the author of the award-winning book ‘Bridging Cultures: the guide to social innovation in cosmopolitan cities’ (2015)

Dr May Newisar (she/her)

Research Fellow in Architecture - University of Leeds

May is Research Fellow in Architecture at the University of Leeds. She is working on a project in Jordan that focuses on the creative economies through youth-led Arts and Craft. She has held several academic posts in several international schools of Architecture in the MENA region and the UK.

May's PhD from the University of Manchester focuses on understanding the politics of technical decision-making in the World Heritage sites to unpack the tensions and conflicts on the different policy levels.

She worked with Mela Social Enterprise as an Associate Research Consultant focusing on raising the awareness of public about Historic England’s heritage values and how it can be reflected on their understanding of the identity of the place.

Areas of expertise are Heritage Governance- Urban Heritage conservation- Public engagement and community participation- Environmental Psychology.
